Taiwan completed the issuing licenses for the 3.3-3.57GHz frequency band in 2020. After winning the bid, the telecommunications industry vigorously built out the 5th generation mobile network (5G) for this frequency band, thereby allowing our country’s telecommunications market to enter the next generation of mobile communication technology

The TTC has yet to cease providing assistance to the competent authorities in promoting the development of 5G policies in Taiwan. It continues to prepare and study policies and measures to promote 5G development in the hopes of creating an accessible environment for 5G development that can meet the needs of faster transmission speeds, higher bandwidth, high density and lower latency as needed in future 5G application services. The arrival of these 5G application services will drive innovative value added applications in high quality audio-visual entertainment, smart healthcare, smart factories, self-driving cars, drones, and smart cities. Promoting the upgrade of technology and innovative applications in the overall communications industry will boost Taiwan’s overall competitiveness and allow all citizens to enjoy the benefits of releasing radio spectrum resources. By actively releasing 5G spectrum resources, Taiwan’s competent authorities move closer towards the policy objective of improving the sound development of Taiwan’s 5G mobile communications industry.

In addition, the TTC also supports the drafting and formulation of various emerging technical specifications through research and analysis of international standards, thereby mitigating the differences between domestic and foreign testing technologies and ensuring integration with international technology.

The TTC assists competent authorities in drafting or revising relevant technical specifications as follows:

  • WiFi 6E Specifications added to Technical Specifications for LP0002 Low Power Radio Frequency Devices Technical Regulations
  • Recommended the addition of IAB equipment provisions in "Technical Specifications for Mobile Broadband Base Station Radio Frequency Equipment (IS ALL)"
  • Added 4.7-5.0GHz telecommunications equipment to Technical Specifications for Mobile Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (PLMN ALL) and IS ALL

On April 23, 2020, the US FCC announced that it would open the 6 GHz frequency band for Wi-Fi use. The spectrum range of 5925 MHz ~7125 MHz, totaling 1200 MHz, allows the use of low-power access devices (Low-Power AP), standard power access devices (Standard-Power AP), and fixed client devices (Fixed Client). In order to evaluate domestic 6GHz spectrum usage planning and existing frequency users (such as microwave stations, satellite ground receiving stations, etc.), the TTC assisted competent authorities in considering the balance between the spectrum required by new technologies and maintaining the rights and interests of existing users. In response to emerging technologies such as Automatic Frequency Control (AFC), evaluations were conducted to study the feasibility of alternative technologies as well as supporting solutions for existing operators to achieve Taiwan’s vision of harmonious coexistence in the 6GHz spectrum.
